# How carrier users log in

Carrier users get a welcome email to set their own password, then log in to Orbit Cockpit and Orbit Connect with an email address or a phone number, with a password or a code by SMS.

Carrier users, drivers included, log in to Orbit Cockpit and Orbit Connect with their email address or their phone number. Drivers with a mobile number can skip the password and log in with a code sent to their phone by SMS, so nobody has to remember a password or set up an email address for them.

## Overview

**Key highlights:**

* **Welcome email:** a new user with an email address sets their own password from a link in the welcome email.
* **Email or phone number:** each carrier user logs in with either, and a user without an email address logs in with the phone number alone.
* **One login per number:** several users can share a phone number as contact data, but only one of them can log in with it.
* **Code by SMS:** a mobile number in a supported country receives a one-time code instead of a password.
* **Password reset by SMS:** a user without an email address resets a forgotten password with a code sent to their phone.

## The welcome email and the first login

When you create a carrier user in Orbit MissionControl with **Create User**, the **Password** row decides how the user gets their first password. It offers two modes: **User sets own password**, the default, and **Set password manually**.

### User sets own password

You enter no password. Orbit sends the user a welcome email with their login email address and a button to set their password. The email is always sent in this mode, so the **Send Welcome Email** box does not show.

1. **Open the link**

The user selects the button in the welcome email. The password reset screen
   opens.
2. **Request the code**

The user requests a code. It arrives by email.
3. **Choose a password**

The user types the code and chooses their own password. From then on they
log in with their email address and that password.

Where the link opens depends on the device:

* **In a browser:** Orbit Connect opens its password reset screen with the email address filled in.
* **On an Android phone with Orbit Cockpit:** the link can open Orbit Cockpit instead. Its screen starts empty, so the user types the email address the welcome email shows.
* **On an iPhone:** the link opens Orbit Connect in the browser, for drivers too. The password set there works in Orbit Cockpit as well.

### Set password manually

You type the password yourself, and the user can log in with it right away. The **Send Welcome Email** box appears and is off by default. When you tick it, the welcome email carries the login email address and the password, and tells the user where to log in. Hand the password over yourself when you leave the box off.

A user without an email address always takes this mode: **User sets own password** is disabled with the hint **Only possible with an email address**. Such a user gets no welcome email and logs in with their phone number and the password you set.

### What the welcome email contains

The email comes in your company's name, in German for users whose language is German and in English for every other language. It names the app that fits the user's role:

| Role | App the email names |
| --------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Driver | Orbit Cockpit, with the links to the App Store and Google Play |
| Carrier Administrator or Carrier Member | Orbit Connect in the browser, and Orbit Cockpit for use on the road with the same login |

Orbit sends no welcome email while the **Carrier User Invite** email is switched off in your notification settings. See [Manage your notifications](https://support.pr-2.orbit.do/en/tasks/manage-your-notifications).

## Email or phone number

The login field in Orbit Cockpit and Orbit Connect is called **Email or Phone Number** and takes either. A phone number works in international format (+49 151 …) and, for German numbers, in national format (0151 …).

A phone number on a `CarrierUser` is contact data first. Logging in with it is a separate right that only one user holds at a time:

* When you create an active user or give them a new number, they get the login for that number automatically, provided nobody else holds it.
* If another user already logs in with the number, the new user keeps it as contact data only and logs in with their email address. Orbit MissionControl tells you so when you create the user.
* A user without an email address has no other way to log in. For them, Orbit MissionControl refuses a number another user already logs in with, and refuses removing their number.
* Deactivating a user or changing their number releases the login. It is never moved to another user with the same number on its own: to move it, disable it on one user and enable it on the other.
* If you are signed in to Orbit Cockpit when an administrator deactivates your account, Orbit Cockpit displays an access-ended dialog. Select **Sign out** to return to the sign-in screen.

### What you see in Orbit MissionControl

On a carrier user's page, the phone number shows how the user can log in with it:

| Label | Meaning | Action |
| ------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Login Active** | The user logs in with this number. | **Disable Login**, if the user also has an email address |
| **Login Available** | Nobody logs in with this number yet. | **Enable Login** |
| **Login Used by Another User** | Another user logs in with this number; here it is contact data. | None. Disable the login on the other user first. |
| **Password Only** | The number gets no code by SMS: it is a landline or from a country outside the list below. The user logs in with a password. | None |

A user who has **Password Only** and no email address cannot reset a forgotten password on their own. Set a new one for them with **Set New Password**.

## Log in with a code by SMS

1. **Enter the phone number**

In Orbit Cockpit, type the phone number into **Email or phone number**. The
screen offers **Send code by SMS**. To use a password instead, select **Sign
   in with password**.
2. **Request the code**

Select **Send code by SMS**. The code arrives on the phone by SMS.
3. **Confirm the code**

Type the code and select **Confirm**. The keyboard can offer the code from
the SMS to fill in with one tap.

In Orbit Connect, enter the phone number and leave the password empty, then select **Sign in**: the form says **Leave the password empty to get a code by SMS.**

code by SMS button and the Sign in with password
link](https://support.pr-2.orbit.do/images/carrier-user-login/cockpit-code-sign-in.png)

*Orbit Cockpit offers a code by SMS for a mobile number.*

A code works once and expires after a short time; request a new one from the sign-in screen. To protect drivers from unwanted messages, one number receives at most 5 codes in 15 minutes and 20 codes a day.

## Reset a forgotten password

Select **Forgot Password?** on the sign-in screen. The reset code goes to the user's email address. A user without an email address gets the code by SMS instead, if their number receives codes. If neither works, the app asks the driver to contact their dispatcher, who sets a new password in Orbit MissionControl with **Set New Password**.

## Countries that receive codes by SMS

A code by SMS goes only to a mobile number from one of these countries. Any other valid number, landlines included, logs in with a password.

| Country | Country | Country |
| ---------------------- | ------------- | --------------- |
| Albania | Greece | North Macedonia |
| Austria | Hungary | Norway |
| Belgium | Iceland | Poland |
| Bosnia and Herzegovina | Ireland | Portugal |
| Bulgaria | Italy | Romania |
| Croatia | Kosovo | Serbia |
| Cyprus | Latvia | Slovakia |
| Czechia | Liechtenstein | Slovenia |
| Denmark | Lithuania | Spain |
| Estonia | Luxembourg | Sweden |
| Finland | Malta | Switzerland |
| France | Moldova | Türkiye |
| Georgia | Montenegro | Ukraine |
| Germany | Netherlands | United Kingdom |

## Example

Nordlicht Spedition hires Mohammad, a driver without an email address. The dispatcher creates him in Orbit MissionControl with his mobile number +49 151 … and a password, and his page shows **Login Active**. On his first morning, Mohammad types his number into Orbit Cockpit, selects **Send code by SMS** and logs in with the code from the SMS. His colleague Julia has a landline number from the depot: her page shows **Password Only**, so she logs in with the password the dispatcher gave her.

## FAQ

**Q: Can a user log in with both an email address and a phone number?**

Yes. A user with an email address and a phone number that nobody else logs
in with can use either. If another user already logs in with the number,
this user logs in with the email address. To move the phone login, disable
it on the other user and enable it on this one.

**Q: Why does a driver get no code by SMS?**

The number may be a landline or from a country outside the list above; the
driver's page then shows **Password Only**. A number that has already
received 5 codes in 15 minutes or 20 in a day gets no further code until the
limit resets. The driver can always log in with their password.

**Q: Can two drivers share one phone number?**

Yes, as contact data. Only one of them can log in with it; the other logs in
with an email address.

**Q: Does the code work on iPhones?**

Yes. The keyboard offers the code from the SMS, and the driver confirms it.

**Q: What happens if a new user does not receive the welcome email?**

The user can still set a password: select **Forgot Password?** on the
sign-in screen and enter the email address. The reset code arrives by email.
If the user has no email address, set a password for them with **Set New
Password**.

**Q: Can a driver set the password on an iPhone?**

Yes. On an iPhone the link from the welcome email opens Orbit Connect in the
browser. The password the driver sets there also works in Orbit Cockpit.
